One of the great “what ifs” in New Zealand rugby history — the Central Vikings were a powerhouse provincial side that burned bright and faded fast. Formed in 1997 from a merger between Hawke’s Bay and Manawatu, the Vikings were built to dominate the NPC and take on the big boys. Coached by All Black hardman Frank Oliver and stacked with rising talent like Christian Cullen, Roger Randle and Mark Ranby, they stormed their way to promotion in just two seasons.
But just as they were set to join the top tier, the dream collapsed. Financial troubles and shaky union politics meant the team folded before ever playing a game in the first division. Now a cult classic in kiwi rugby folklore, Central Vikings gear is as rare as it gets — a symbol of unrealised potential and 90s provincial chaos.
