The early Super 12 Chiefs were still known as the Waikato Chiefs, carrying the mana of the Waikato province into the new professional era. Ford's sponsorship was everywhere in New Zealand rugby during this period, and Canterbury's Made in New Zealand cotton jerseys were built to last.
