Description: The Hild Bede rugby jersey represents one of Durham University’s most historic colleges, the College of St Hild and St Bede. Formed in 1975 through the merger of two teacher training colleges — St Hild’s (for women, founded 1858) and the College of the Venerable Bede (for men, founded 1839) — Hild Bede developed a strong sporting identity of its own within the wider university.
On the field, Hild Bede rugby sides competed in Durham’s fiercely contested college leagues, distinct from the university’s main DURFC squad that played national student competitions.
